Nissan Skyline GT-R engines and the work we know inside out

The Skyline GT-R is a special car, and the engines and driveline reward proper, knowledgeable care. Here is some of what we see day to day, and how we keep these cars healthy and reliable.

RB26DETT engine – oil pump, bearings and oil control

The twin-turbo straight-six in the R32, R33 and R34 GT-R is a fantastic engine, but it has well-known weak points that an experienced specialist watches closely. The standard oil pump runs from a short crank snout that can work loose and crack the pump drive, and the engine is prone to oil starvation and surge under hard cornering and track use. Left unchecked, that leads to big-end bearing wear and, in the worst cases, a failed engine. We carry out oil pressure testing, fit a crank collar or an extended-snout crank and an uprated oil pump where needed, improve oil control with baffled sumps and breather work, and inspect bearings as preventative maintenance so small issues never become expensive ones.

Turbochargers & forced induction (mechanical)

The factory ceramic turbochargers fitted to many imports are known to wear and fail over time, and worn turbos can send debris into the engine. We inspect and replace tired turbochargers with stronger steel-wheel or hybrid units, renew oil and water feed lines, and overhaul the supporting hardware – intercoolers, hoses, fuelling components and cooling. This is mechanical, hardware-led work to keep the forced-induction system healthy and dependable, including full engine builds where an owner wants a stronger, more durable bottom end.

R35 GT-R transmission & driveline (GR6)

The R35’s GR6 dual-clutch gearbox is superb when maintained and troublesome when neglected. Clean dual-clutch fluid is critical, so we change it with the correct Nissan or equivalent specification at sensible intervals. We diagnose the common faults, including solenoid and pressure-sensor problems that cause harsh shifts or limp mode, and the bellhousing wear that many cars need attention to around the 25,000 to 30,000 mile mark. We also fit uprated clutches, transmission coolers and stronger internals for cars used hard, and look after the transfer case and driveline.

Suspension, brakes & geometry

A GT-R only feels right when the chassis is set up properly. We replace worn dampers, arms, bushes and droplinks, service and upgrade the brakes for road or track use, and set geometry and corner-weights on our alignment equipment. Whether you want a comfortable road set-up or a sharper track alignment, we dial the car in so it stops, turns and puts its power down the way it should.
