Porsche engines and models we know inside out

Porsche engineering rewards proper, knowledgeable care. Here is some of what we see day to day across the range, and how we keep these cars healthy.

Flat-six engines – IMS bearing, bore scoring & RMS

The water-cooled M96 and M97 flat-six fitted to the Boxster and Cayman (986 and early 987) and the 911 (996 and early 997) is a wonderful engine when looked after, but there are three things to stay on top of. The intermediate shaft (IMS) bearing can wear on cars built between 1997 and 2008, so we inspect it and fit an uprated bearing as preventative maintenance. Bore scoring, where the cylinder coating wears and the rings scuff the bore, is best caught early through a borescope inspection and oil analysis. Rear main seal (RMS) oil leaks are common too, and we cure them with the latest revised PTFE seal while the gearbox is off. Note that the Mezger engine in the Turbo and GT cars does not use the same IMS bearing.

911 Turbo & water-cooled cooling

The 996 and 997 Turbo, GT2 and GT3 use coolant pipes that are bonded into the block with adhesive, and after enough heat cycles that adhesive can let go and dump coolant, sometimes at speed. We carry out the recognised preventative fix by pinning or welding the pipes so they cannot work loose. Across the water-cooled range we also handle electric water pump and thermostat replacement, radiator and condenser corrosion, coolant-system bleeding and the front-mounted rads that collect debris and rot out if left.

PDK & Tiptronic transmissions

Porsche transmissions are superb when serviced on time, and skipping the fluid is where trouble starts. On PDK dual-clutch cars we carry out the gearbox oil and filter service that keeps shifts crisp and protects the clutch packs. On older Tiptronic automatics we replace the fluid to prevent valve-body wear and slipping, and on manual cars we look after the clutch, dual-mass flywheel and the rear main seal at the same time. We also service the differentials and, where fitted, the transfer case on four-wheel-drive models.

Cayenne & Panamera air suspension & chassis

Many Cayenne and Panamera models ride on electronically controlled air suspension. After six to ten years the air springs perish and the compressor is overworked trying to keep up, leaving one corner sagging or the car sitting low. We diagnose air leaks, replace air springs and the compressor, and recalibrate ride height. Alongside this we look after the staples on these heavier cars: brakes and discs, propshaft and driveline, cooling and the common oil leaks worth catching before they spread.

Across the range we also handle the Porsche essentials: spark plug and coil service, oil-leak diagnosis and repair, suspension refresh and corner-weighting, and air-conditioning service.

Porsche servicing FAQs

Under Block Exemption rules, an independent specialist can service your Porsche without affecting its manufacturer or used-car warranty, provided the correct schedule is followed and OE-quality parts are used, which is exactly what we do.
Yes. We run professional diagnostic equipment for Porsche fault-finding, service resets, battery registration and module coding, the same jobs you would expect from a main dealer.
Yes. On M96 and M97 Boxster, Cayman and 911 engines we inspect and replace the intermediate shaft (IMS) bearing as preventative work, and we cure rear main seal (RMS) oil leaks with the latest revised seal, usually while the gearbox is already off.
Most customers pay around half of main-dealer prices for equivalent work, using OE or OE-equivalent parts and genuine Porsche service schedules.
Our workshop is on Sewardstone Road, serving Porsche owners across North London, Hertfordshire and Essex. We also offer a free vehicle health check and a courtesy car.
