Brake Disc Skimming
[one_half]

So why resurface discs?
As the diagrams above show, skimming your discs or changing your discs before fitting new brake pads is very important. The old disc fitted with new pads has much less contact area and will generate extra heat.
With our on-car brake lathe, brake discs are skimmed quickly, efficiently and with amazing accuracy. It saves our customers money and gets more life from brake discs that would otherwise have to be disposed of.
Brake discs should be resurfaced when:
- Brake pads are changed but new discs are not necessary, which is likely in at least 50% of all cases. You will not have to bed in the brakes, they will be perfect when you leave.
- There is evidence of brake vibration due to disc thickness variation or excessive run-out. The only permanent solution to this problem is the on-car lathe.
- Discs are corroded, causing poor braking performance or imbalance.
- Brakes are noisy. This normally occurs when pads are fitted to ‘lipped’ discs, causing brake squeal. It can be corrected by skimming the discs to remove the lips and give perfectly flat disc surfaces.
When the brake discs reach their minimum thickness you will then need to change them, but bear in mind most discs can be re-skimmed a number of times.
Disc skimming is part of our full car servicing and repair, and pairs well with 4-wheel alignment and a free vehicle healthcheck.

Brake disc skimming FAQs
How much does brake disc skimming cost?
It is typically much cheaper than replacing your discs, and in many cases it is done as part of a brake service. Get in touch and we will give you a price for your car.
When can discs be skimmed instead of replaced?
In at least half of cases, when the pads are changed the discs can be skimmed rather than replaced, as long as they are still above their minimum thickness. We measure them and advise you honestly.
Will skimming fix my brake judder or vibration?
Yes, where the judder is caused by disc thickness variation or run-out, our on-car lathe removes it permanently by machining the discs true to the hub.
Do you skim the discs on the car?
Yes. Our on-car brake lathe machines the discs in place on the vehicle, which is more accurate than off-car skimming and means there is no bedding-in needed when you leave.
